Yarraville Yoga Centre opened for it’s first classes on 20 May 2003.
That means twenty years since we brought Iyengar Yoga to the western suburbs of Melbourne.
How it happened
Up until our renovation of the Olympia Reception Centre, Iyengar Yoga in Melbourne had been a largely inner north activity. Amanda Hood, Heather Kitchen, Peter Harley and David Spratt, all trained at Clifton Hill Yoga Studio with Frank Jesse, decided to try a push into the west.
It was a little scarey as we didn’t know if we could get the numbers to make it work here but history shows that there was a desire among Westies to have a well resourced Iyengar Yoga school and off we went.
Over the two decades we have introduced more than ten thousand people to Iyengar Yoga. Many have moved on but for many the knowledge gained will have endured and sparked a flame that can be rekindled throughout their lives when the time is right.
Please come and join us for a celebratory Indian dinner at the studio on Saturday 3rd June 5:30pm. We hope to see as many friends and students, past and present as possible.
On the evening an India vegetarian meal will be served and talks will be given by students and teachers on how it all happened and on what YYC has meant to them. Senior teacher Alan Goode from Yoga Mandir in Canberra will give a short talk on the history of Iyengar Yoga in Australia and on what we can expect in the future.
